On his inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” New York City, promising “a fresh chapter” and an audacious beginning to his term.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The 34-year-old political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.

Rejecting counsel to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my convictions for fear of being called extreme,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Challenges

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to address these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as surprisingly cordial.

The Fundamental Tests of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing city upkeep: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and making sure reliable transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
